FINE LARGE FRENCH ART DECO CRAQUELIER LEMANCEAU SCULPTURE Sainte-Radegonde 1935. A STUNNING & LARGE FRENCH ART DECO POTTERY SCULPTURE of TWO LEAPING DOGS by CHARLES LEMANCEAU by the SAINTE-RADEGONDE FACTORY for PRIMAVERA circa 1935.

This is a large substantial size, measuring 12.5" tall, 21.5" wide and 5 deep ; weighs 3.9 kilograms. It is marked LEMANCEAU to the plinth, for Charles Lemanceau (1905 - 1980) one of the most important French sculptors of the Art Deco period. It was made by the Sainte Radegonde factory in Touraine for the Parisian Printemps department store's ATLIER PRIMAVERA section. The rare crackle glaze technique, known as "crispe", features a craquelier finish covered with tiny droplets, and gives the sculpture an exceptional look. The sculpture is illustrated in the Sainte-Radegonde catalogue under the name " Couple Levriers Sautant ".

This is a classic and iconic piece of French Art Deco design... Epitomising all that is wonderful about the Deco period. I also think the rare glaze on this piece is so appropriate, with it's subtle shading really emphasising the beauty of the design. It is in excellent original condition, with no damage or restoration ; there is a little bit of rubbed loss to the grey glaze on the corners and edges of the plinth extremely minor, just mentioned for accuracy.
